55 Chevy Dirt Track

Postby snapper on Fri Mar 05, 2010 9:52 pm

I finally finished this one up - it only took me 6 months for the Group Build  . This was not the best kit (AMT 55 Street Machine) for customizing - there ended up being more warping issues as I was making final fits. There are lots of little scratch built things and "opportunities" (I guess you would say) on this model. The next time around, I would like to improve on some things, such as tightening up the roll cage. I appreciate any comments or feedback you might have

I would also like to thank Tommy for letting me pester him so much on this build (plus for giving me a radiator and master cylinder).

Thanks, Colby

Colby,

Excellent !!!!!!!!!

Love the scrape/rust spots on the room. Very realistic.

It was worth the wait.

Colby! This is remarkable! You captured it 100%! I hope you don't mind, but I'm about to make you famous! I'm going to send some pics of this to some people that are trying to start a "Remembering Athens Speedway" type website.
Well done!

Thanks fellas - I would like to go back and give this a nice red clay chalk job, but I think I'm going to do that later. For now, I had to find a dry patch of red clay somewhere for the photos, so I was able to set it down on the edge of the shed.

Keith - Those are bungees, and from the original speedway photos, I noticed where the line "breaks" - that placement was the best I could come up with, but the holes need to have been a little smaller (can't fix that now). There were a few other areas that I had to make some guesswork, and my wife called me pretty quick on a big error that I missed from the photos - I should have removed the window post. I'm looking for some smaller bungee material, but that's an easy fix later.

Thanks again for the comments, and thanks Tommy for doing that - be glad to send you whatever I have. I couldn't have built this the way it is without your help.

I decided to go ahead a post a few photos since I made some minor changes. I don't mean to keep posting them, but hey, it will be another 6 months before I get to do this again  (hopefully not).

Colby, this is truly a beautifully done model. Who cares that it took 6 months. You did a masterful job of capturing the look and feel of the dirt track. I really like the photographic technique you used to display the model. GREAT JOB.

Thanks guys! I will get to that dirtying up part later. I would like to learn how to use the chalks.
